Job Description
Their responsibilities include:
Research
Conduct research to develop new manufacturing processes and improve existing ones
Design
Design and plan equipment layouts, and configure plants and equipment to adapt to product ranges and process technologies
Safety
Establish safety procedures for working with dangerous chemicals, and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
Testing
Conduct tests and monitor production processes, and use process simulation software to find efficient production methods
Troubleshooting
Troubleshoot problems in manufacturing processes, and investigate and modify processes and plants based on collected data
Other
Estimate production costs, work with other professionals, and maintain quality documents
Chemical engineers typically work full time, but may need to work extra hours to meet production targets or troubleshoot problems. They often need a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or a related field, and some employers prefer candidates with practical experience. Chemical engineers should have strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills, and be proficient in advanced mathematics. They should also have good teamwork and interpersonal communication skills, and be able to write technical reports and use database and spreadsheet software.
